Local Jones Beta

Q: Where the Heck is My Post? A: The VCs Ate It.

So it has been awhile since we posted anything here on the LJ blog. Things have been a little crazy as we are simulataneously trying to raise money and make site improvements and market the site to small businesses. Typical start-up story, I know. We're trying to get better at juggling as fast as we can. We promise that we haven't forgotten about you.

Curious how things are going for Local Jones on the fundraising front? Well that's a state secret...at least for now. I am at liberty to say that at least it is going better than this...

Bugs Bite. Not for Long...

Posted by Elisa Durrette Sun, 04 Nov 2007 13:47:00 GMT

So over the past few days I have been getting e-mails from some of you to report various bugs you've encountered. I thought that it might make sense to post some of them here so that you are not caught by surprise the next time you try to use the phone system or website.

BUG #1 When you enter the Local Jones ID of a business over the phone, you hear, "You have enterred," then silence followed by "if this is correct press 1."

The reason you are hearing the silence is because we have not made audio recordings of all the business names. We could just use a computer voice, but we think that's really lame. We are working as fast as we can to record the business names.

BUG #2 When you try to fill out the merchant sign-up form it takes me to the consumer sign-up form

Ooops..this was our bad. We improperly linked the sign-up form on the "Advertise" page. This has now been corrected.

BUG #3 The images at the bottom of the "People" page and the full size images of user thumbnails aren't displaying correctly in your browser.

Yeah. This wasn't cute at all, but it has now been fixed. Praise hallelujah for developers who are willing to work on the weekends!

BUG #4 After you rate a business by phone it does not show up on your My Places page.

This is not a bug. In all likelihood you have forgotten to set up your phone account by calling into Local Jones after you registered on the website. If you didn't do this after you registered simply call Local Jones (214.245.0933), press 9 to go the account menu and then follow the instructions. Leaving messages for a business before you do this will cause the messages to be posted to that business' profile, but not your account.

These are all of the bugs we currently know about. If you have others please drop us a line at help@localjones.com. Also be sure to check out the help page.

Hey Dude! Where's My Business?

Posted by Elisa Durrette Thu, 01 Nov 2007 15:28:00 GMT

So I've received a couple of e-mails from recently registered users asking the following question:

QUESTION: How can I find out if a business has already been rated on Local Jones? What happens if I want to rate a business that is not on Local Jones?

ANSWER: The easiest way to find out if a business has already been reviewed is to do a business search on the home page using the business name. If the business appears in the search results you can view its profile to see if it's been reviewed. (All reviews show up on a business' profile page).

If your search returns zero results (because the business is not listed in our database) you can call Local Jones and choose to leaving a rating for a business without a Local Jones ID (Option 3).

Once you leave a rating over the phone for the business, it will appear in your MyPlaces tab the next time you log on. Your review will be listed as a "New Merchant". Clicking on it will open a page that allows you to assign a business name, address, etc. Once you complete this info we will create an official listing with an assigned Local Jones ID. Regardless of whether you complete this info or not the message will be available to people browsing the Local Jones site.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Local Jones' database currently has 1000+ business listings for the Dallas beta. Even so there are many businesses that do not appear in the DB. We are steadily working to build a better database, still you may have to create your own listings from time to time.

Thanks for the feedback! Keep it coming.
